Louis XVI Style Palisander Marquetry Chest of Drawers, Late 1800s
A phenomenal Louis XVI Style commode sauteuse chest of drawers with elaborate marquetry, late 1800s. French palisander rosewood, with lovely red undertones and dark banding. Thick, rectangular top with canted front corners sits over two deep drawers and tapered square feet. The chest is heavily inlaid with stunning geometric marquetry. An oval of chevron parquet on the top is ringed by a strip of two-toned checked angled inlay. This trim is repeated along the outer edge of the top, cutting back and around to create a kind of square knot. Both of the drawer fronts are similarly graced, with broad expanses of parquet embellished by geometric two-toned inlay. The sides have the same treatment, with less involved trim. A scalloped apron on the front is adorned with a brass frieze containing acanthus and dental details. The working locks have brass blazon key escutcheons with heraldry motif and the fanciful drawer pulls have textured rings that lay flat around brass medallions with embossed sail boats. The drawer space measures 30.25" wide, 16" long and 8" deep.

Condition: Good antique condition. Tiny nicks and losses along a few edges, one small age crack on the right side, and a small well done restoration on top. Very light superficial marks in two places on top. Little gaps between drawer tops and frame, and between right corner of base and top, naturally occurring due to wood aging. Does not affect use or functionality.
