circa: Early 1800s
A superb French Empire Period bedside cabinet nightstand in walnut, from the early 1800s. The multi-tonal walnut has a marvelous 200 year old patina. Two column legs in the front are emblematic of the Empire style's focus on classical architecture. At the top and bottom of the columns are gilt bronze hardware pieces with stylized floral motif and repeating ribs and beading. The front feet are wide and turned. A slight wood gallery abuts the sides and back of the cabinet top. One drawer sits atop a single doored cabinet, both with circular gilt bronze knobs echoing the ribbing and beading on the other hardware pieces. A lower shelf with a concave front edge rests just above the feet. Flat sides and back finish out the piece.
Condition: The back legs were raised 3/8". Some scuffs and dings on the legs and feet, typical for its age. A crack on the drawer front and one filled crack on the left side.
