A large brass umbrella holder from Burgundy. This unique piece is shaped like a wine harvest basket from the wine regions of France. It has a raised back with a prominent repousse coat of arms containing a griffin, decorated shield and arabesques. The body of the piece showcases a very detailed repousse rustic tavern scene. Four men sit at a table drinking as another one is leaving. Cobbled floor and brick walls, jugs and glasses sit on high shelves, one man rests on an over turned barrel, a plant sits in an alcove by wooden door; its a well executed environment. A tall border of water leaves finishes the repousse along the bottom. The two inch raised base has simple ribbing to match the trim along the top. This piece was likely specially made for a castle at a vineyard.
Condition: Some spots of verdigris. A broad, but shallow indentation on the left side of the piece. THe wood bottom is not original.
