Louis XVI Style Cherrywood Desk, France Early 1900s
A phenomenal Louis XVI style desk in richly detailed cherrywood. This piece runs the gamut on period carvings, displaying nearly all of the classic motifs for LXVI. A band of egg and dart runs along all sides of the apron, bordered by tidy beading and anchored with well-defined rosette die joints and a large cartouche on the center front and back. The cartouches are carved in high relief and feature impeccable ribbon tied baskets containing rose bouquets, grounded by exquisite acanthus detail. A single generous drawer in the front has two fancy drop handles in brass, and extends 34" wide, 20.75" long and 2.5" deep.

The tapered legs are highly ornamented from top to bottom. Turning near the top is divided by a laurel band. Below that the legs are fluted and "en asperges", having asparagus detail inside the flutes. A ring of water leaves connects the flutes to a cube joint and then finally to turned spindle "toupie" feet. The curved cross stretcher bears the same beaded detail as above and its showpiece is a large, raised rosette in the form of a peony in full bloom. All of the carvings throughout are very well articulated.

*The apron is 24.5" from the floor, but the dropped acanthus detail is 23.25".
