Country French Rustic Larchwood Desk, Mid-1800s
A rustic French larchwood trestle table desk with polychrome remnants and fantastic patina, circa mid 1800s. Four thick, well-worn planks form the top, with nearly two centuries of cuts and wear. The piece was probably a kitchen table and work space. Two broad, tapered legs with chamfered edges rest on squat and stepped supports. At the center of either leg is a carved flower typical for Queyras, the region of the Alps where the table originated. The stretcher is scalloped with carved indentations, joined to the legs with simple wooden keys. Two drawers in the front with iron hardware, the smaller of the two is an old replacement with a rustic chain link as a pull. The larger drawer on the right is 28.75" wide, 21" long, 4.25" deep. The smaller drawer is 15.25" wide, 15" long, 3" deep. Faded paint remnants throughout hint at the desk's colorful past. Red trim on the table top edges and red circles along the stretcher, blue along the chamfered corners of the legs as well as blue and red on the feet, blue encircling the red petaled flower on the sides. Floor to apron measures 24", 46" between the legs.
