circa: Late 1800s
An ornate French Renaissance Revival walnut buffet with marble top, circa 1880. Every inch of this piece was graced with embellishment, from the paneled sides to the drawer fronts and relief carved cabinet doors. The shaped apron plinth has heavy molding, the top has lighter molding to complement. Scroll carved panel sides are topped with geometric carving and a light molded rim that separates the drawers from cabinets. The center cabinet door has elaborate geometric relief carving and heavily molded edges. Sitting above it is a relief carved and wonderfully textured drawer in grape leaf motif, punctuated by a brass handle of detailed scrolls sprouting from flowers. Each side cabinet door has heavy molding around the edges and relief carved center detail including scallop shells and raised beads. The side drawer fronts are carved to resemble foliate scrolls and feature complementary brass handles that echo the carved shapes behind them. Between the drawers are protruding shoulders with relief carved acanthus leaves, just below are carved dental detail and shield decoration, followed by more molding, stacked scales, more scrollwork and raised beading. Four bun feet at the front and straight feet on the back. The fabulous marble top is an even scattering of off white scales over a sea of deep green, bracketed in on both ends by a subtle ripple of creamy pink, just beautiful. Inside each cabinet is a single fixed shelf, with 11.5" space on both top and bottom, cabinets are 16.5" deep. The center door opening is 18.5" wide by 24" high, the sides are 10.5" by 24". The drawers are 17.5" long and 3.5" deep, the center is 19" wide and the sides are 11" wide.
Condition: Good antique condition, minor age spots. Marble has some nicks at the edges and some light surface scratches. The key pulls are a later addition.
